On January 28, 2017, members of the Girls Club, called Destined Girls For Positive Change, located at the Love A Child Orphanage in Montserrado county, were the elated recipients of 10 brand new sewing machines.
The donation comes as additional support to the Girls Club. Supported by the Kids’ Educational Engagement Project (KEEP), the Girls club has been undergoing sewing skills training. The sewing training is a part of the organization’s economic livelihood program to provide vulnerable girls access to skills that they can use beyond traditional school and a way to earn an income after they leave the orphanage.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the orphanage, Mother Rebecca Wreh thanked the kind donor Mr. Marwan Eid and pledged to continue to support the girls in acquiring skills they can use to empower themselves. She noted that the girls have an added level of self-confidence with the added skills and have been eagerly looking forward to the day they had their own sewing machines to practice and start to make outfits for others.
She commended the girls’ own commitment to learning the skill and noted that within the short space of 6 months, the girls knew how to cut, stitch, make their own simple outfits. She noted that with the sewing machines, the girls can now improve their skills and learn how to make more complicated patterns. She thanked their kind instructor, Ms. Betsy Doebo who has been volunteering her time to train the girls.
Making the presentation on behalf of KEEP, its Founder, Mrs. Brenda Brewer Moore encouraged the girls o remain focused, not only on the sewing but also to their lessons in school. She pledged her continued support to the Club and said they are further challenged to do even more.
KEEP extends thanks to Mr. Mawrwan Eid (and family) of the City Builders Company for the generous donation of the machines which are valued at about U$1,750
