The second batch of the third phase of KEEP’s teachers training took place at the Salma Ballah Public School, Sappimah in Gbarpolu County on Apirl 21, 2018. The overall goal of this training was to strengthen teachers’ capacity in the various pedagogical skills and techniques in teaching reading at early grade level. It also serves a refresher for some of the teachers who benefited from the teachers training conducted by KEEP in 2017. Seventeen teachers from three public schools (Salma Ballah, Small Bong Mines and Medfasu) attended the one day training which was at no cost to the teachers.
The training was rolled out in various sessions using the instructional model – ‘I do, we do and you do’. Emphases were made on teaching struggling learners in mapping sounds, digraph, and diphthongs and blends using the instructional model. A 15 minute lesson covering all the five components of reading was modeled by the trainer. Participants were paired to practice peer teaching on the five components in reading.
Present at the opening session were the District and County Education Officers. In his remarks the Hon. B. S Catakaw expressed thanks to the management of KEEP for their continued support to education in the County. ‘I am not a stranger to activities of KEEP in the County and trainings like theses will go long way in strengthening the capacity of our teachers” he concluded that as they are currently working on the County Education report, KEEPs efforts in the county will be highlighted in the report. “The County Education Report will never be completed with mentioning the various contributions we have received from KEEP” he concluded. 
Also speaking at the program was the District Education Officer Hon Hon. Charles Kabba who attended the training sessions up to the closing. He indicated that he wishes KEEP will extend these kinds of trainings to other schools in the county. He admonished the participants to use the skills and knowledge they have acquired during the workshop in their classroom so as to make a difference in the reading skills of their students.
This training cycle brings to 32 the number of teachers trained this year.
